A Self-Tuning Method for Router Throughput Shaping

چکیده

A great deal of research has been conducted over the last several years into optimizing the performance of Internet communications by way of controlling the size of router queues for packets waiting for transmission over multiplexed links. The optimization algorithm is invariably framed in terms of either minimizing the number of queued packets waiting for transmission, maximizing the outgoing link utilization, or both. More recently, a separate group of researchers have put forward a short flow/long flow classification architecture, arguing in effect that latency is the key criterion which should be optimized. This note puts forward a proposal that effectively merges these separate schools of thought. It describes a self-tuning algorithm called SPRED (Short Packet Random Early Drop) for router queue management, which is demonstrated to be able to optimize the flow of short packets which require low latency, whilst maintaining bulk flows using long packets. The key advantage of this approach is that preference may be given to “real-time” voice and video flows. An attractive attribute is that the algorithm is adaptive, and is able to adjust to varying traffic conditions without manual intervention.

An Improvement over Random Early Detection Algorithm: A Self-Tuning Approach

Random Early Detection (RED) is one of the most commonly used Active Queue Management (AQM) algorithms that is recommended by IETF for deployment in the network. Although RED provides low average queuing delay and high throughput at the same time, but effectiveness of RED is highly sensitive to the RED parameters setting. As network condition varies largely, setting RED's parameters with fixed ...

Self-tuning Optimal PI Rate Controller for End-to-End Congestion With LQR Approach

This paper presents a self-tuning optimal PI (Proportional-Integral) rate controller for end-to-end congestion in the IP-based Internet. We employ LQR (Linear Quadratic Regulator) approach from modern control theory in the optimal controller design that would allow the user to achieve good transient performance of IP networks by selecting proper positive definite matrices Q and R. Self-tuning P...

A novel self-tuning feedback controller for active queue management supporting TCP flows

Wireless access points act as bridges between wireless and wired networks. Since the actually available bandwidth in wireless networks is much smaller than that in wired networks, there is a bandwidth disparity in channel capacity which makes the access point a significant network congestion point. The recently proposed active queue management (AQM) is an effective method used in wired network ...

Wavelength Routers in Wdm Local Area Networks

This paper presents a novel scheme for scheduling packet traac on a wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) local optical network which employs a wavelength router. An N physical wavelengths. We propose TDM schedules for interconnecting MN nodes with a wavelength router. We show that for non-zero transceiver tuning time, throughput on the order of N can be achieved.

Self-similar traffic shaping at the edge router in optical packet-switched networks

Traffic shaping at the edge router is one possible solution to mitigate the adverse effects of self-similar traffic in optical packet-switched networks. In this paper we propose an optical packet assembly mechanism and study its impacts on the traffic characteristics. In addition to the Hurst parameter, we apply new measures to describe the short-term correlation and to investigate the effect o...
